PULLING ON THE LEAD ISSUES!

Postby brendac » Tue Jan 03, 2012 5:41 pm

Help! My little 7 month old is pulling terribly on the lead, I am using the method of stopping when he pulls and then bringing him back to my leg with a treat and then only moving with him alongside of me when he isn't pulling, but am not feeling we are getting very far!

I have put him onto a chocker chain instead of a collar but he is still doing the same thing, he is also barking on our walks as cars go past as well. I usually walk with the two Shelties but have even tried taking Rico out on his own to try and see if individual training on the road will help. Any advise ???

Try holding a wooden spoon with peanut butter down by your leg, just at the right height for him. If he pulls, stop and turn the other way. They come back to see what is going on. Walk the other way until he starts to pull, then repeat going the other way. Don't use a choker. You may want to invest in a martingale instead - I have been told these are better for them - they can't slip out of them. When you see a car approaches, be pro-active. Make him sit and treat him. It will take time but these should work.
