Exercise: Healthy length and duration for walkies

Postby Simon » Mon Jan 02, 2017 6:58 am

I am the proud owner of a healthy and beautiful 5 month old sheltie puppy named Chrissy.

I live in a small suburban town that is blessed with beautiful surrounding countryside ideal for sheltie walkies.

I have plenty of time to exercise Chrissy, and she just loves those countryside walks, but I don't want to overdo it by overexercising her.

At 5 months, how long should her walkies really be?

What about, at say, 9 months to a year?

There is a lovely riverside walk through the countryside to the next town, with a train ride back, that I'd love to do with her in the spring/summer when she'll be about 9 months to a year old. Its about 5 to 6 miles in total length. Would that be too much for her?

Hello to you Simon and your little Chrissy, From Denmark.

it is about 10 km !!
No, I certainly do not think - important that she is allowed to go at her own pace and you will make little rest along the way where she can get something to drink.

Surely she would find such a trip fantastic. :D

If you daily go longer trips, so she is in good shape, which is actually important for a Sheltie.

Walking is really good exercise and damages definitely not their skeleton.

Sorry my bad english
