I have a 5 year old blue merle--a bit larger than average size-- that has recently shown an aggressive side to me as never before. When in a deep sleep and he is touched or petted, he has snapped at me-- a trait I've never seen before in him or my previous two shelties. I understand being startled might cause this defensive reaction, but is this common? Is it temporary? Is this a symptom of something deeper? Has anyone else experienced this?

I now know to be sure he is awake before I pet him, but am afraid of the unknown. Any information will be appreciated.

I've never owned a dog like that. It could be emotional in which case you might need to stimulate him more during the day or give more affection before bed at night, or physical maybe he's in pain or something going on inside that is causing him to be ultra sensitive and grumpy. Like digestion or tics. Maybe talk to your vet.
