Thank you for considering a rescue Sheltie! Right now, there are many Shetland Sheepdogs desperately in need of forever homes. The shelters linked here take in abused, neglected, abandoned, and homeless Shelties on a temporary basis. Their priority is rehabilitation: vet checks, vaccinations, de-worming, flea protection, microchipping, and grooming. They always spay or neuter to help prevent the problem of dog overpopulation. Then they seek out new families who have the time and sensitivity to help these beautiful Shelties in need.

Most Shelties for adoption are adult dogs, although sometimes entire litters of puppies are turned in after unplanned pet pregnancies. Sadly, people still give puppies, kittens, and all kinds of baby animals as Christmas presents, which are given up in the New Year when the responsibility of pet ownership kicks in.

There are, of course, many reasons to adopt an adult Sheltie. They're often housebroken (they'll pee and poop outdoors), may recognize many commands (like sit, here, and drop), are much more affordable than buying a puppy, and best of all, they have a lot of love to give. Many people adopt Sheltie to give them a second chance at life. Rescues have already lost their families and been made homeless, and are in need of secure, loving homes.
